What is Seed Card?
So, what is Seed Card I hear you ask!
Well, after working in the print industry for over a decade, we see new paper and card options popping up all of the time. In more recent years, as the world has become more
eco-conscious, these materials have started having certain traits in common, eco-friendly, recycled, FSC certified.
We had been working with seed card for a few years and we knew we had stumbled on something special. After a lot of research and product testing (our homes are now overrun by small pots and wildflowers), we created The Seed Card Company.
Seed card material is so unique. Not only is it completely biodegradable, it won’t leave any nasties as it naturally breaks down, but better than that, it is embedded with wildflower seeds so when you plant the card after you’re done with it, with a little care and attention, it will grow into beautiful wildflowers.
But there is more, it is made completely from post-consumer waste. It’s actually a bit of an eco-hero in the print world.
Post-Consumer Waste? You What?
Being made from post-consumer waste means that no trees were harmed in the making of this card.
Refreshing to hear right?
The collected waste paper is mulched up into a pulp and seeds are added to the mix. After some stirring and agitation the mix is pressed out into sheets and left to naturally dry. Once it has dried you have a card that works just as well as any other but with the beauty of a hand finished product that now also has seeds embedded within it – seed card.
We then use this handmade card to print and make our products; from greetings cards, wedding suites, and social stationery
to marketing material and custom eco-packaging. We have got all of the bases covered!
planting seed card
You do not need to be a seasoned gardener or houseplant veteran to turn our seed card into a plant.
You only need a few things to get started:
You can plant seed card inside or outside but do keep in mind the conditions. How well would you grow if you were left in a snowstorm or in a desert?
- Fill your pots 2/3 full of soil. Press it down so it isn’t loose but not too much! Those roots need to be able to make their way through.
- Add your seed card, either whole or torn up into pieces depending on the size of your pot. It doesn’t matter if the pieces overlap.
- Cover the seed card over with a little more soil, not too much, just a thin layer is fine. Give it a good water (but again not too much, just until the soil is moist). You want the card and soil to be damp but not trying to grow in a swimming pool. Keep this up over 10 days or so and before long the seed will germinate, and shoots will start to sprout.
- Keep up the watering and within four weeks those little shoots will grow into small plants. Water them as needed and then just watch them grow!
What is in our Seed Card?
All of our products available online are made from plantable seed card embedded with a mix of wildflower seeds:

How does seed card help the environment?
Aside from not harming any trees during the production of seed card, when planted the card with its embedded seeds help make the world a greener place by growing into wildflowers.
“But it is just another plant” we hear you say. Very true but what you are doing by growing wildflowers is creating new and small ecosystems by encouraging and aiding growth of important species of pollinators, such as our wonderful bees and butterflies.
